Tour is roughly 70 minutes long and includes areas of the upper floors that can only be accessed via staircase. Please note that there is no wheelchair or push chair access to the first and second floor of Bramall Hall due to the historic nature of the building. These floors are accessed by staircase only.
The Shop and Visitor centre and the onsite cafe, The Stables Kitchen are all fully accessible. There are 3 accessible parking bay in the Large car park which is approximately 100m from the Hall. There are a further 2 accessible car parking bays in the Small car park which is approximately 200m from the Hall.

Insights into the life of an early modern gentry family
The wall paintings at Bramall Hall are amongst the most important in the country. The Davenports of Bramall Hall were leading gentry in the county and their house reflects this. Its plan and decoration would have been at the forefront of fashion, to be emulated by those lower down the social scale. Dr. Kathryn Davies will explore how and why these paintings are so important and what they can tell us about the Davenport family.
Kathryn will look at the characteristics of the wall paintings at Bramall and the issues of dating these. Looking at potential sources for design and comparisons with other painted decoration can help us understand something of the social and cultural values of the people who commissioned these paintings. So, what were the Davenports seeking to communicate to the people who would see these wall paintings and who, indeed would be invited to see them?
Copies of Dr. Kathryn Davies fascinating book ‘Artisan Art’ will be available for purchase at the event. This book is a ‘must read’ by all who are interested in the social and culture history of the Tudor and Stuart age.

History Wardrobe presents – Monday is Wash Day!

The two Lucy’s (Lucy Adlington & Lucy Ridley) plunge into the suds and stains of historical laundry and discover how to get your toga, petticoats or collars white-than-white! A wonderful talk, with a brilliant array of antique laundry kit, and lots of lovely nostalgia (except for anyone who has ever got their fingers mashed in a mangle…)!
Lucy Adlington is writer and collector. She is author of 7 young adult novels – including the award- winning The Red Ribbon – and 5 non-fiction titles. Her most recent history book, The Dressmakers of Auschwitz , is a New York Times bestseller, and translated into 22 languages worldwide.
Lucy Ridley is a talented performer with a keen interest in Mary Quant and other female designers. She believes it’s really important to shine a light on overlooked lives from the past and is currently researching women of County Durham.

The Witch’s Potion Trail 2025

Bramall Hall will be open Thursday -Sunday, 11am -4.30pm
This is a spooktacular spotting trail within Bramall Hall!
Batilda the resident witch fell from her broom, scattering ingredients in every room! Find them all, get them right, to make a potion for Halloween night!
There is a small prize if you find all the ingredients and you might even get to meet Batilda, our slightly scary witch!
Recommended for children age 3+
